(A Late) March-April 2024 Update
This post is to catch up on the Saṃyukta Āgama releases and updates from February and March of 2024. I was rather ill at the end of February and beginning of March and missed the planned update, but I continued working once I had recovered. Since the last update, work continued on the Aggregates and… Continue reading

Ekottarika Āgama Update (Week 31)
I’m happy to report that we’ve recovered from the illness that visited us last month, and I’ve released translations of EĀ 12.10, 13.1-7, and 14.1-10. With these three chapters, we’ve reached the end of the Book of Ones. I wrote a lengthy summary of the chapters added last month at SuttaCentral’s Discuss & Discover forum… Continue reading

April/May Update: Parinirvāṇa Sūtra Released
This month’s releases represent an important milestone for me as a translator. I’ve released translations of both the Mahāvadāna Sūtra (DĀ 1) and the Parinirvāṇa Sūtra (DĀ 2). I first read and considered translating these two large sūtras that begin the Dīrgha Āgama about 15 years ago when I first became seriously interesting in translating… Continue reading

April Update: Two More Dīrgha Āgama Sutras
Since my last update, I’ve added two Dīrgha Āgama and 16 Saṃyukta Āgama translations to Dharma Pearls. This brings the DĀ translation project up to 10 sutras complete and 13% of DĀ by length (~20 of 149 pages of Taisho). For the Saṃyukta Āgama, I’m continuing to edit drafted sutras, releasing them as I go. In addition to these new… Continue reading

A quick list of the additions can be found on the What’s New page at Dharma Pearls. DĀ 11 Increasing One… Continue reading

October/November Update
Since my last update, I’ve been focusing on translating Chinese parallels to MN 12. T757 Hair-Raising Joy This is the complete parallel to MN 12 that we have in Chinese. It’s clearly a later version of the same sutra preserved in Pali. The two texts have almost identical structures with only a couple substitutions like… Continue reading

September Update
Last month was genuine fun translating several Ekôttarika Āgama sutras with stories about the Buddha’s enlightenment and converting disciples. Being a creative writing guy, it was great to work on these stories and see the humor and poetry of these ancient storytellers. I was mainly focused on the parallels to MN 22 and 26 in… Continue reading
